Tomato salad from my childhood

Tomato salad from my childhood

Back in the day and the place there was no dressing. There were just 2 options for vegetables salad accompaniment – sunflower oil and sour cream. My choice was always the latter.

Dressings now are the dishes of there own, mixing sweet, salty and sour tastes – mustard, anchovies, onions, garlic, tahini paste, zests, herbs, lemon, all sorts of vinegars, all combined by a good olive oil. Of course I love olive oil, it’s health benefits are indisputable, trying new dressing recipes is exciting and revealing.

But once a year, when I have these fleshy, fragrant, flavorful tomatoes from my garden I treat myself with the salad I loved the most as a kid – tomatoes, green onions and sour cream, salt, pepper. One more ingredient needed – a slice of spongy bread to dunk into that mix of juice from tomato and sour cream. And scraping the bowl with a piece of bread brings me back to my childhood.

  1. In my childhood, tomatoes were not always available, so the salad was usually made with cucumbers, salt and sour cream. That salad was called “tasty” (“вкусный”). Often there’d also be sliced radishes added to it. When tomatoes were available and mixed in, the salad would be called “super tasty” (“вкуснятина”). The sunflower oil variation was used sometimes too, but I preferred sour cream.
